Shooting Portraits

I went out into the world and I battled my fear of shyness! Yes, that's right, I walked up to about 2o complete strangers and I asked them all to let me take pictures of them, after introducing myself, of course. All 20 of them turned me down, but then I walked into this old shoe repair shop to have a pair of stilettos fixed and the face that stood in front of me, as with the shop surrounding him, seemed intriguing. The machinery in the shop was so very old, but still beautiful as was he. He was old and beautiful, especially his piercing blue eyes. After paying for my shoe repair, I said to myself, "Just ask him...it's not like you haven't heard 'no' yet". And so then, I did it...I asked him and he said yes!!! I couldn't believe it....I FINALLY received a "yes". He was a nice old man, but I could tell that he was a bit uncomfortable with me. I could see it in those beautiful blue eyes and I could see it in his body language. I mean, after taking some portrait shots of my daughter the previous day, I just knew he was. But, I was grateful. My portraits of him (along with all of the "no's" I received from others declining to be photographed) were all steps in helping me become less shy.

Cell Phone Document

Doesn't it seem like everyone has a cell phone in 2008? Cell phone technology has grown so much over the past ten years, and I want to capture just how much of a necessity cell phones are and how great the demand is for them. My little cousin has one, and she's only nine years old-that's insane to me!!! Also, everyone that I know has a totally different cell phone, so I plan to document as many cell phones as I can. I Phones, flip phones, PDA's, you name it. I think that after doing this project, I will discover that there are many more cell phones models than I thought. I hope to also discover someone who is still holding on to some old cell phones…you remember, the huge ones that were the size of a cordless phone. I think I may even capture cell phone users on their phones.

Well, it was nearly four days ago when I came up with the above document proposal for cell phones in our present day. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any REALLY old cell phones for my observations, but I did discover something. Every single person who's cellphone I used did not only consider they're cell phone a necessity, but they seemed to all want more. When I say want more, I mean they weren't satisfied with the one they had. Granted they were all new, they all were looking towards getting newer models in the future. I found this to be an example of how unsatisfied and ungrateful we have become. I mean, the fact that no one had an old cell phone for me to capture its images just confirms my observations. I wonder what things will be like ten years from now...will anyone have the cell phones they have today?

The photo above, "Thumbs Width", does a really great job displaying just how far the manufacturing and design of cell phones has come. The phone is very slim and my photo is proof of that. I wish I could have had other "proofs" such as the very sleek IPhone or the very firs cellular telephone, which was invented in 1973 by Martin Cooper. Pictures, photos, they hold a strong value in our society. They are proof of where we've come from and where we are today.

Night Light

Every since I was a little girl, I've always been intrigued with night time. I don't know if it's the darkness that pulls at my interest more or if it's how light looks in that same darkness. Or maybe it's how the Earth seems to be still and quiet that demands my attention. I just love the night. I love how the stars and the street lights look in the sky. I love to listen to the vague sounds of the crickets chirping in the distance. And John Szarkowski's article, The Photographer's Eye, made me want to grab my camera and go on a shooting spree...especially at night. My focus during the spree was to capture light, in the form or light, itself, the detail that it can give to objects, how it can frame an object or be framed, how it can capture time on film, and its vantage point. My favorite focus, of course, was how light is defines time. I think my night-time photo in my Chevy is very retro. Please take a moment to view my tope five light photos. I'd love to hear you feedback.
